Orange County, California Swimming Pool Accidents and Drowning Lawyers
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately ten swimming pool-related deaths per day in the United States. Additionally, nonfatal drownings have caused significant brain damage with long-lasting effects in victims including memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functioning.
California Swimming Pool Safety Act
As of January 1, 2007, California’s Swimming Pool Safety Act requires residents who have been issued building permits for a swimming pool or spa to equip their pool with several safety features. These include:
- Isolation of the pool from access to the home by an enclosure that meets specific guidelines
- Removable mesh pool fencing and a self-closing, self-latching gate
- Approved pool cover meeting specific requirements
- Equipment of the home with exit alarms on doors providing direct access to the pool
- Doors leading to the pool must also have self-closing, self-latching devices with release mechanisms placed no lower than 54” above the floor
- Swimming pool alarms that sound when unauthorized or accidental entrance to the pool is detected
- Other means of protection
These and many other safety rules and regulations of the California Swimming Pool Safety Act were designed to help prevent swimming pool accidents and drownings throughout the state. Unfortunately, accidents still occur and personal injuries are a regular outcome.
