What Should a Person Do
After an Accident?
Information from our California Car Crash Injury Lawyers
If you have been injured in a car crash or other accident, you may be feeling confused, stressed, or scared. Our California car crash injury attorneys have put together a list of some things you should do to help preserve your claim:
- Telephone the proper authorities and health care providers. Inform them of any bodily injuries and go to the ER or hospital if the injuries are severe.
- Take reasonable steps to treat any injuries and protect any damaged property from further loss.
- Always obtain the name, mailing address, and telephone number of the owner of any property or the driver’s license information of any driver of any vehicle(s) involved. If the other driver(s) is/are not an owner, obtain the owner’s name and mailing address, tag or registration number and ALWAYS obtain the name of the owner’s insurance company.
- Note the date, time, location, scene or road conditions, make, model and year of any vehicle(s) or products involved, and any apparent damage and injuries. Write down your recollection of what happened and draw a diagram of the accident scene.
- If possible take photos of any involved property, vehicle, visible injuries and the accident scene. Preserve all physical evidence, especially your damaged property until you can consult a California car crash attorney.
- Secure the name, mailing address, and telephone number of any eye-witnesses. Also, write down the names and badge numbers of the investigating authorities and/or police and other emergency personnel at the accident scene.
- Ask the investigating agent or officer how to obtain a copy of the accident report and get a copy when it becomes available.
- Notify your insurance agent/agency or company as soon as it is practical, but do not provide a recorded statement or discuss the details of the accident or your injuries with anyone other than the proper authorities, police or your doctor until you have at least consulted with a California car crash attorney.
